MIT Startup Uses New Materials to Reinvent Air Conditioning

By midcentury, global AC demand is expected to nearly triple — to 18,000 terawatt-hours a year. That’s more electricity than the U.S., China, India, Germany, and Japan use combined, just to keep buildings cool.

That’s the problem Transaera was built to solve.

The breakthrough is materials science. Transaera’s heat pump uses metal-organic frameworks — a Nobel Prize–winning class of materials developed to pull moisture from the air before cooling, instead of overcooling and reheating like conventional rooftop systems. The result: up to 40% less energy per building.

Transaera CTO and co-founder Ross Bonner sat down with Markham Hislop of Energi Media to dig into how the materials work, why MOFs are poised to reshape HVAC, and what efficiency at this scale means for grids straining under data centers, electrification, and AI.
